OpenAI has officially launched Sora, its groundbreaking text-to-video AI model, further expanding the capabilities of artificial intelligence in content creation. Launched on Monday as part of OpenAI's 12-day "ship-mas" product release series, Sora is now available for ChatGPT subscribers in the US and most other countries. This innovative model is complemented by Sora Turbo, an enhanced version that offers features like generating video from text, animating images, and remixing videos.
Those with a ChatGPT Plus subscription can generate up to 50 priority videos, boasting resolutions up to 720p with durations of 5 seconds, using 1,000 credits. The premium ChatGPT Pro subscription, priced at $200 per month, provides "unlimited generations" and up to 500 priority videos. This plan increases the resolution to 1080p and extends the duration to 20 seconds. Notably, the Pro plan permits subscribers to download videos without a watermark and allows up to five simultaneous generations.
OpenAI initially teased its text-to-video AI model, Sora, in February earlier this year. The eagerly anticipated release was confirmed by tech influencer Marques Brownlee, also known as MKBHD, who shared his experiences with Sora during testing. During the launch livestream, OpenAI unveiled Sora’s explore page, featuring a feed of AI-generated videos from community members, alongside innovative features such as storyboards, remix tools, and scene blending capabilities.
OpenAI emphasizes transparency and ethical usage with Sora, ensuring that generated videos carry visible watermarks and C2PA metadata to indicate their AI origins. Users are required to agree to terms confirming that uploaded content does not violate standards by including minors, explicit or violent content, or copyrighted material. Rohan Sahai, Sora’s product lead, acknowledged the challenges OpenAI faces in balancing creative expression with preventing misuse and illegal activities on the platform.
Even without a ChatGPT subscription, users can explore a diverse array of AI-generated videos on Sora's platform. While available in the US and many other countries, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman noted a delayed launch for most of Europe and the UK. The release follows a controversial leak by a group of artists involved in early testing, who protested against the alleged use of their work for "unpaid R&D and PR.”
The release of Sora marks a significant milestone for OpenAI, setting new standards in text-to-video technology. As OpenAI continues to innovate, Sora's launch represents a crucial step in redefining content creation through artificial intelligence, providing users worldwide with exciting new tools for creative expression.
